Why work with Neil
Neil is a Digital Accessibility obsessive with over 30 years experience, working for not-for-profit, governmental and private sector organisations.
Prior to returning to independent consultancy last year, he was Strategy & Policy Lead at Intopia, where he:
- Carried out strategic reviews of organisations seeking to become more mature with respect to digital accessibility
- Advised on the real-world use of assistive technologies such as screen-readers, including those needing to test their products
- Advised organisations on the writing and implementation of digital accessibility policies, processes and planning, as well as accessible procurement, governance and ICT strategy.
As an independent consultant, Neil has:
- Carried out accessibility testing of online and other electronic content
- Advised on best practice in inclusive publishing
- Advised on international Copyright law and domestic equivalents in various countries (particularly in the Asia Pacific region) as it affects exceptions relevant to print disabled people
- Advised on assistive technology used by blind people, particularly in the educational field
- Advised the Blind Low Vision Education Network New Zealand as it established its own Accessible Formats Production capability and school library service
Previously, he spent ten years on the Leadership Team of the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the blind, establishing its digital library and spearheading it's international relations work. He played a leading role in the international campaign for the adoption and implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty, an international copyright exceptions instrument helping to end the book famine experienced by blind and low vision people around the world. He was also a leading member of the Transforming Braille Group, an international consortium which designed and helped bring to market the world's first electronic braille device for less than US$500.
